AI on Wheels, teaching pedestrians and self-driving cars to talk to each otherAI on Wheels,
A two-way communication protocol between people and autonomous vehicles, designed and prototyped in 48 hours.
01 Challenge
How do pedestrians walk safely on roads full of autonomous vehicles?
When a human driver sees you, you get eye contact, a nod, a wave. A self-driving car gives you nothing. Under the hackathon theme "AI on Wheels", we zoomed in on this missing conversation between people and machines.
02 Solution解法
1 · The car tells you it sees you1 ·
Pedestrians never know whether a self-driving car has actually detected them. So we created a communication protocol: when the car detects a pedestrian, it flashes its lights three times, a clear "I see you."

2 · You can talk back2 ·
But why should people just wait to be detected? We flipped the direction: pedestrians can actively send a signal to the car, covering the cases where radar has blind spots.

03 Outcome成果
From problem to working prototype in 48 hours, and first place (NT$80,000) at the 2023 Science and AI Hackathon, AI on Wheels, hosted by Foxconn × MIT Media Lab.48 小時內從問題走到可運作的原型,在 Foxconn × MIT Media Lab 主辦的 2023 Science and AI Hackathon「AI on Wheels」拿下首獎(NT$80,000)。

04 Takeaway收穫
Cross-disciplinary collaboration doesn't start with convincing people. It starts with hearing them.
Design and engineering look at the same problem from completely different angles, and the communication gap was frustrating at first. But once I really listened, I found our ideas always overlapped somewhere we could build on. In just two days, the team went from talking past each other to working in sync. I learned not only to understand a problem through another discipline's eyes, but how to communicate and collaborate with people outside my own field.
